Gender Violence in Africa: African Women's Responses
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (August, 1999)
Average review score:

A comprehensive lookProfessor Green's keen insight and obvious compassion paint a sometimes painfully realistic portrait of gender abuse in Africa. Her comprehensive look at the issue(s) allows the reader to explore several facets of the current situation. Definitely an academic look, but well worth the read.

Genocide and Covert Operations in Africa 1993-1999 (African Studies, 50)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (May, 1999)
Average review score:

Genocide and Covert Ops.Great book on a sensitive and relatively unknown topic for most Americans. Madsen does a fantastic job of framing the germaine issues for people unfamiliar with the recent economic, political, and military history of south central Africa. Well researched and documented, he tells a compelling story of how the US government works to destabilize the region for economic and political gains.

Geography of Sub-Saharan Africa (2nd Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (11 July, 2002)
Average review score:

One of the most comprehensive texts on Sub-Saharan Africa. This is one of the most comprehensive books written onSub-Saharan Africa. It starts off with the spatial location of theregion and the physical aspects - Climate, Vegetation, Soils, and Drainage, that makes the region unique. The authors go on to discussing the human-environmental impacts, one of the most problematic of environmental activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. They discuss reasons for deforestation in Africa South of the Sahara, effects of forest degradation, and desertification a very real problem of desert encroachment that has turned productive lands in Sub-Saharan Africa into desert environments. One of the topics covered in this text that is absent in many textbooks is the Historical Background of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially when most of the old historical records are said to be "non-existent" because of the lack of a written language in the region. The authors have done a good job incorporating culture, conflict of culture and change in the face of cultural multiplicity of that exists in this region. Another important aspect of this book is the comprehensive coverage of gender and the roles of men and women in this part of the world. This book is interesting to read, it is informative and best of all, it is current.

The Ghosts of Africa
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (October, 1981)
Average review score:

An incredible adventure based on a true storyThis novel really captures a lost part of Africa. It details the German resistance in Africa during WWI. The germans were led by german noble named Paul Von Lettow. For four years they tied down nearly half a million british troops with barely 12,000 of there own. Von Lettow wrote the book on guerilla warfare although he is largely forgotten today. The book contains a great cast of characters in addtion to Von Lettow, many of whom were based on real people. The book has plenty of action and romance. I highly recommend it.

ZimbabweThis is an exceptionally well written tour guide book for Zimbabwe. I really enjoyed the photographs and the maps of the regions of Zimbabwe. The maps are very detailed depending on which area you plan to visit. It talks about the people, the climate, the language, and the way of life. It tells the specifics for traveling by air, rail, and car. Each section is divided up by a specific part of the country. Listed are accomodations, tours and excursions, where to eat, health hazards and annual events and useful telephone numbers.I highly recommend this as a take along for your trip to Zimbabwe. Average review score:

The Best Book I Bought on NamibiaI've been sent to Namibia to work for a year. This is one of my life rings. It is up to date (I wish I had been able to get it before I went) and very informative. In general the Globtrotter guides are one of the best guidebooks around. This is no exception. It has lots of information on Windhoeh (the capital) and Swakopmund (the very best place to visit. The information on restaurants is up to date, very important when travelling around and imagining eating a a place you've seen a great review for. The maps are ideal for travelling, I never had any problems using them. This book is small enough not to be a pest to carry around but detailed enough to give you all the goss and info you'll need. It is inexpensive but packed with colour photos. Buy it and go!
