Wonderful first read for East Africa
This is a wonderful read to get in touch with East African history and culture. The history of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda since the mid-1800 until the mid-1950. Explorers, travelers, soldiers, hunters,... anyone who has been outstanding in the history of these part of the world has a place in the book.

Perfect for beginners, as me, in the history of Africa.

Elephants: The Deciding Decade
Published in Hardcover by Sierra Club Books (March, 1999)
Authors: Ronald Orenstein, Brain Beck, and Brian Beck
Average review score:

My First Elephant Primer...
"Elephants: The Deciding Decade" was one of the first elephant books I purchased. At the time I did not know much about elephants. This was a great book for me to "cut my baby teeth" on with regards to its vast overview of elephants: their history, social structure--herds and family groups. It did a good job of discussing young elephants and their behaviors and maturation. It also had some unique topics (I won't spoil it by saying what they were) that I have not seen in the many, many elephant books I've read since. This edition has pertinent updates necessary to know about if one is really serious about elephants and their futures. One of the true joys of this book was the excellent photography. The level of reading is technical at times, yet easily understood for the most part. A must for the true "elephanatic's" book collection!

Amazing!
This is an amazing book, it is very well detailed, Guttery has taken a lot of time and care in writing this book and it shows. It's truly amazing how he could write about so many airlines in such a huge continent. It is an excellent reference book. I'd recommend it for anyone intrested in aviation in Africa.

Eritrea: Even the Stones Are Burning
Published in Hardcover by Red Sea Pr (August, 1990)
Author: Roy Pateman
Average review score:

The definitive book on Eritrea
I came new to this subject but became rivetted by Pateman's engaged and engaging style. He writes in an easily, understandable but profound way about one of the most significant struggles for nationhood in the XX century. He covers many centuries of history but convinces me that Eritrea is indeed a special place. An enduring sense of nationhood developed during the liberation struggle a sense which has deepened during the cowardly Ethiopian attacks of the last few months. Pateman has helped me understand why the Eritreans have survived and why thay may become very important actors in Africa in the next century.

Ethiopia and Eritrea: A Documentary Study
Published in Hardcover by Red Sea Pr (January, 1993)
Author: Habtu Ghebre-Ab
Average review score:

For anyone who wants the facts, the light, before the heat.
A very methodical and objective look at the roots of one of the most heated, longest, bitter, and sadly unnoticed wars of our time. The author shows the context through scholarly research of documents and statements that proceeded the eruption of the roof of Northeast Africa, now Eritrea and Ethiopia. I believe it is a gem of objective refrence in an often emotionally charged field.

Ethiopians an Introduction to Country and People
Published in Paperback by ()
Author: Edward Ullendorff
Average review score:

A professional yet compact book on Ethiopia. A classic.
This book was introduced to me by an Ethiopian friend, whilst visiting Ethiopia in 1997. I found it full of facts about the country, thorough, professional and yet accesible. This despite the fact that it was first printed in the fifties. Mr. Ullendorf does tend however, to look at Ethiopia through rose- tinted glasses. This should not discourage those who have little knowledge of the country, for it is an excellent introduction to a fascinating country.
