Culture And Common Mental Disorders In Sub-Saharan Africa
Published in Library Binding by Psychology Pr (01 April, 1998)
Average review score:

Elegant cross-cultural psychiatric researchIf you are an anthropologist, sociologist, or physician interested in performing fieldwork and top-notch cross-cultural research, then Dr. Vikram Patel's book "Culture and Common Mental Disorders in Sub-Saharan Africa" is a must-read. The author explains in painstaking detail a lucid synthesis of his library research about mental disorders in Africa with truly elegant and meticulous field research that he conducted while practicing and teaching psychiatry in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. Although much of the book is presented in technical research terminology, the summary and conclusions sections are clear and thought-provoking. Dr. Patel is truly a pioneer and trailblazer in doing cross-cultural psychiatric research, emulating and expanding on the work of the original guru of cross-cultural psychiatry, Dr. Arthur Kleinman. I recommend this book as a "can't miss" primer on cross-cultural research and pscyhiatric epidemiology.

This book MUST be classified as a bible for Cycad lovers! As a dedicated gardener and conservationist, this book, was written and put together, with what can only be described as a person, who not only knew her "product": but with love, passion and an awareness of the idiots out there like me. I feel so humble. The photographs are superb! Her 'lessons' to people like me, will remain with me for the rest of my life. R.I.P. Cynthia and thank you

encyclopedic survey of African contemporary musicThis is an encyclopedic survey of contemporary sub-Saharan African music up through the mid-1980s. Organized by country, Graham provides a brief background on local traditional and mid-century popular music and then concentrates on the music of the 1970s and the first half of the 1980s. Covers religious as well as secular music. Includes brief discographies. I did not identify any factual innaccuracies within the realm of my limited knowledge. Excellent index.

Dead Ned: the autobiography of a corpse who recovered life within the coast of Dead Ned and came to what fortune you shall hear
Published in Unknown Binding by Heinemann ()
Average review score:

I can't believe it's out of print!I just finished reading Dead Ned (and Live and Kicking Ned) last month. I enjoyed these books far more than any of the recently published novels I read this summer, and I find it unfortunate that publishers, and readers, would let such a treasure go out of print. Shame on us.
