Author: David O'Connor
Average review score:

excellent introduction to Nubia
This book, divided in two sections, was compiled during the course of the 1993 exhibition of the same name. It collectively portrays the fruits of knowledge of it. In the first part, the author introduces this fascinating civilization, by explaining its politics, religious beliefs, society, culture and history from the Bronze Age to the Napatan Meroitic Period. The second part contains more than 300 black and white pictures presented at the exhibition. This is a valuable work for those needing to learn more about Nubia.

Ancient Traditions Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali and India

Author: Matthew C. Montfort
Average review score:

GOOD INTRO TO THE RHYTHMS OF AFRICA, BALI AND INDIA
This is a very good book for those who are interested in World music and/or fusion music and want to be able to play all those beautifull and often complex rhythms that one hears in that type of music.

The first chapter is about the Rhythms from West Africa, it has a clear chapter on polyrhythms and a formula to figure them out. Chapter two deals with the rhythms from Bali, the one you will hear in Gamelan music, and chapter Three deals with Indian Rhythms, Both from North and South India.

And then in the fourth and final chapter one mixes all that rhythm knowledge to create new patterns, hence the name Future Possibilities.

If you do all the exercices in the book you are well one your way to play and understand the rhythms that masters like Trilok Gurtu and Glen Velez play.

Also recomended are Rhythm book authors like Reinhard Flatischler, Alan Dworsky, Sule Greg Vilson, Peter Magadini and Tom Klower.

The Anglo-Boer War: The Road to Infamy 1899-1900
Published in Hardcover by Arms & Armour (August, 1996)
Author: Owen Coetzer
Average review score:

The official inquiry.
The British Army, "with armaments and reserves that would be insufficient for a third class military power", was embarrassed by its poor showing (225 surrenders) against a force of scruffy farmers (Boers) in the Natal Campaign of 1899-1900.
After the war, so costly in men and money, a commission was established to review the conflict to examine the failures and correct the deficiencies. This book skillfully weaves the proceedings of that Commission with admirably readable narrartive to uniquely illuminate that unfortunate episode of history, the echoes of which can be heard yet today in South Africa.
"What did the Commiussion achieve? It changed the way Britain made war in the future. It changed the structure of command. It changed the attitude of the common soldier, and it spelt the end of the cavalry charge...".
And it laid the groundwork for the British Expeditionary Force of 1914, one of the finest armies in history.
Excellent reading for the general reader of military history, and essential for students of the Boer War and the British Army.

Excellent Photographic Safari
I have a child who is Autistic and 3 1/2 years old who fell in love with this book. He carries it around with him, although it is a bit big. His father (me) is a well known wildlife photographer who is an admirer of the photographic talent displayed in this publication. I recommend this publication highly to those who have an interest in African wildlife and the preservation of endangered and threatened animal populations. The only way this book may have been improved is if they used some of the photos that my sons father took. I still give it 5 stars!

Racism
Apartheid and Racism in South African Children's Literature, 1985-1995 went far beyond my expectations, in many ways that I could not explain. In the past, books have never been really interesting to me; I usually put them down by the end of the first chapter. This one caught me by surprise because it is related to my background, as well as being interesting. I learned a great deal of history about South Africa that I could have never imagined. Example one, the way Blacks were treated and how whites took power because they feared the Black population. A leader should stay in power by meeting the people's needs not by subjecting them to inhumane conditions and ideas. It should not matter what color one is, but what type of character one has. analytical
Apartheid and Racism in South African Children's Literature, 1985-199 goes into critical detail about what people of color had to face on an everyday basis. It was torture; nobody, no matter what, should be given that sort of treatment. The authors do an excellent job of recreating the past by explaining everything so clearly that anyone would want to go to South Africa and help out as much as possible. The main message of this book was to inform people about the apartheid government and how people of color were treated because of its merciless acts. Apartheid is a horrible form of government that started in 1985 and ended in1995. It not only took away the freedom of Blacks, it broke down a community that was never given a chance. Just imagine a time where you were being judged and ridiculed on an everyday basis without having the freedom to defend either yourself or your family. It broke my heart the way people let their prejudice destroy a country.

"Armed and Dangerous" : My Undercover Struggle Against Apartheid
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (November, 1993)
Author: Ronnie Kasrils
Average review score:

Armed and Dangerous
This is one of the best books about the anti-apartheid struggle I've read - by someone who was in the thick of it who is obviously both brave and politically astute. Ronnie Kasrils, the author, was a leader in the armed struggle and is now a leader in the South African government - Minister of Water and Forestry. His transition is documented in an updated version of this book published by a different publisher.
