Red Sea Peril
Published in Paperback by Sheridan House (April, 2002)
Author: Shirley Billing
Average review score:

Red Sea Peril - an eye opener!
Having spent my life at sea on Tugs, Ships, Barges & every type of pleasure craft I can get hold of, I have been traveling the world in sweet innocence! To read about such an obviously honest & gentle couple, who would do anything to help anyone they met, who might like help, taken prisoner in this way, seems incredible. I am so glad they were able to gain their freedom & let us read about their ordeal & their friends, relatives & captors. A gripping read, that shows a couple that are so definitely made for one another. Therefore a read with everything:- Travel, Drama, Adventure, Gentleness, Love, Compassion......... What else can a good book have! I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!

A tale for sailors
I have really enjoyed reading Red Sea Peril. I found I could imagine Shirley and Peter, so different, and so complementary at the same time.
I liked the style, the sentences are short, precise, with just enough humor. In fact it was very pleasant to read.
The chapters are just long enough and the flashbacks permitted the reader to set the situation of a sailor's life and the choices you have to make. BUT I would like to have followed with small charts at the beginning of each chapter (what my own editor has asked me to do) with points where you were and where you go. Sailors like to see this.
However, I appreciated very much all the photographs, very well situated. I like very much too the "introspectives" and would have liked even more of them. I enjoyed too the poetry, it rings so "true" and I felt that very much. Even in drama I was aware of Shirley's "joie to vivre".
Finally you hae given me a taste and I wish to read more of your adventures because this book merits it. Ihope to read the next book soon.

one of the all time favourites
My five-year old adores this book. It has great illustrations and an engaging story line about a monster hiding in the cave that turned out to be a tiny caterpillar. It is hillarious and involves child attention. After the first reading my son knows who is hiding in the cave and tries to reasure all the scared animals every time we read it. This book is a joy to read for both a parent and a child and has a great message that what we fear often turns out to be small issue.

Age Appropriate Attention Holder
This book holds the attention of its intended audience beyond belief. The repetitious phrase, spoken by the would be monster, enables young readers to stay involved as they anticipate each animals incounter. Older readers can't wait to find out the monster's true identity. Best of all the illustrations don't give the monster's identity away until the appropriate time. All during the story it is evident the children's imaginations are whirling wildly. A must have for any teacher or reading volunter.

Safari Journal
Published in Hardcover by Silver Whistle (April, 2003)
Author: Hudson Talbott
Average review score:

Fabulous Must Have Book!
This Book is a great innovative book that is a 12 1/2 year old's fictious journal of his African Safari. There is action, adventure, humor and factual information about african animals, Swahili words, Massai people and wildlife preserves in Africa.

It's the most innovative children's book I've seen in a long time and will appeal to any child between the ages of 6 and 15. DON'T HESITATE -- BUY THIS BOOK! (you won't regret it!)

Fresh
This book was sent to me by a friend who knows I collect children's books. I had never heard of Hudson Talbott before, nor had I heard of this book.

It's fabulous! Safari Journal will appeal to both girls and boys ages 7 to 15, as well some adults. My 5 year old daughter asked me to read it the day it arrived, and she sat through the whole story, although it was quite a long story for a 5 year old! (I'm not so sure this would be typical, though.)

I love the photographs, the innovative way factual information is interwoven within a funny, adventureous story and the feeling that you are reading the actual journal of this 12 1/2 year old.

Side note: If you've ever been to Disney World's Animal Kingdom Lodge and liked it, you'll LOVE this book. It highlights the same animals you'll see there and the same people that are showcased in the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Safari, the Last Adventure: How You Can Share in It
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 1984)
Author: Peter Hathaway Capstick
Average review score:

Safari The Last Adventure
Though a little dated, this book is an outstanding primer for your first safari to Africa. There is no better way to prepare than to read Capstick's book unless you have a friend or consultant who has "been there, done that"... This will truly enrich your first experience and prevent you from missing out on some of the richest moments of the trip.

A must read for anyone going on safari!
This book provides the reader with virtually everything you need to know and ever wanted to know about going on safari. Everything from what one should expect from the guide and hunting concession, to what the guide and hunting concession expects from you! Lists of taxidermy prices, while it may be somewhat outdated, will give the reader an idea of what to expect. This book doesn't contain an much heart pounding excitment as Capstick's other books, but it is interesting nonetheless. Anyone going on safari or considering it will benenfit from reading this book.

Shebeen Tales

Hard to find, worth the wait
I learned of this book through reading Mr. Hove's editorials in the Zimbabwe Weekly Standard online. He is an outstanding writer and this book is a series of essays on Zimbabwean life in the 1990s. For anyone who is interested in what is happening there now, the book provides essential background. The country's problems are not new. It is often difficult for American readers to find books by contemporary African authors, and I highly recommend this one. I also recommend checking out Zimbabwe's independent papers on the Web: The Standard, the Daily News, the Independent, and the Financial Gazette. Congress is now pushing through major legislation on Zimbabwe, and the U.S. press barely mentions the country. The British press focuses on limited aspects of the situation. Read what this author has to say, he knows what he's talking about.

A must read for anyone interested in Africa
I read this after I left Zimbabwe, and it brought back so many memories of that beautiful country, full of resourceful people. This book is a snapshot of Zimbabwe in the 1990's, that examines so many aspects of the richly vibrant capital of Zimbabwe, Harare.

Slavery: The African American Psychic Trauma
Published in Paperback by Lushena Books (01 January, 1994)
Authors: Sultan A. Latif and Naimah Latif

Inspirational and Motivational
This is an inspirational book that should be in every school in the country. It explains the root cause of the black/white racial conflict in America. After reading this book, it becomes clear what was really lost by African people who were taken from their homes and families. No American history class is currently teaching that African people were here before Columbus, or that Africans ruled Spain for 800 years prior to the slave trade. No American history class is currently teaching that the African people who were brought here and forced into slavery were highly educated in African schools and universities, and were speaking and writing in several languages prior to their enslavement. This information would make a vast difference in how whites would view blacks and how blacks would view themselves. This is a book that must be read by blacks, whites and every other ethnic group and nationality. It is a very informative review of world history and a very insightful examination of human behavior.

third eye blind
This book covers a wide range of facts that have explained the origin of several negative stereotypes that africans are labeled with. The knowledge that I found in this book was never offered in any of my history classes. This book is a must read for anyone seeking the truth. I highly recommend this book to all thirsty souls.

Smara, the Forbidden City: Being the Journal of Michel Vieuchange While Travelling Among the Independent Tribes of South Morocco and Rio De Oro
Published in Paperback by Ecco (July, 1900)
Author: Michel Vieuchange

one of the most amazing travel journals
Stumbled onto this small work on a back shelf and bought it for a quick read 15 years ago. I have never stopped thinking about it. It is the personal journal of a young romantic on a personal quest seeking a rumored city lost in the desert of Morocco. The danger, pain and ultimate loss of his life to illness far from home is punctuated by his momentary view of the ruins, which to the true romantic, overshadowed all else. You can put yourself in his place on every page and feel his pain and exhiliration. The book is testimony to his brother who followed his trail to find the truth after his failure to return, and found the journal with the nuns who nursed him till his death. It is truly a gem in the travel book genre.

real traveler +++
An amazingly real account from the journals. Steeped in the romantic tradition of solo travel, the account begins in hope and ends in the still silence of illness where no words can be written, though the flicker of hope undoubtedly held on in this man's breast till the end. It is as honest and immediate account of a personal adventure of great risk and pain as can be found in the twentieth century. All travelers should read and admire.... though none should follow.

a curriculum jewel!
If you are committed to reducing stereotypes you'll love this one. A South African child walks thru the South African city where he lives. He's dressed much like my grandson in northern California. Here are stop lights, trucks and cars, airplanes and a typical South African shopping area. He visits the library to renew his favorite book about other areas of Africa areas where lions and crocodiles live, an Africa he has seen only in books. Suitable for 3 thru adult.

A great look at city life in the African Continent.
This beautifully illustrated children's book introduces children to an "Africa" they do not see portrayed very often. The main character, a young boy named Asraf, takes the reader into his world, and helps children understand that there is incredible diversity within the African continent. This is sure to delight you and your children, as you discover together the many aspects of Ashraf's life and dreams.
